Women in the Old Dominion University's police department, just as any othe department, exist, but at rates much lower then men. One position that is rare for women to be in is the chief of police in their department. On February 13 of this year, Old Dominion University appointed a new chief of police, officer Rhonda L. Harris (left).
Chief Harris is responsible for emergency responses, crime prevention programs, campus patrols, safety escort services and more just as a male chief of police would be. She overlooks 54 sworn officers as well as 70 security officers with very few being women. Her status as a female may have played a role in the consideration of her obtaining this position but did not keep her from it.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Chief Harris has 25 years experience in law enforcement and also meets all the position requirements. For many decades being male was a requirement but the Universities requirements of age, education, phsyical abilities and more were all satisfied showing change among the acceptance of female officers.
