Prior to 1845, females were completely excluded from all law enforcement agencies. Throughout history, it has still continued to be a predominantly male dominated career. In modern society, however, women have proven to be a valuable asset to the law enforcement community. They are often more adept at dealing with dangerous situations than men, because they tend to be less aggressive. We see this impact in our own community, as Old Dominion has recently announced a new female Chief of Police. The media has begun to show female officers in a positive light, depicting them often as solving crimes before their male counterparts. However, there are still many instances of discrimination within this field. This website will be discussing the development and problems that women face in law enforcement today.
